Photo Journal Cliff's Pole Barn 2006
|
Cliff began building his
dream 36 x 36 pole
barn in the spring of
2006 at 65 years of
age. The original plans
for the barn came
from his friend Fred
Frank. Before the
building took place, 35
pine trees had to be
removed. You can see
the pine trees in the
foreground of the
photo in the second
row. An artesian well
was dug by Holt
Drilling of Brockway.
Dobson's Excavating
of St. Mary's did the
excavating work of
removing the stumps
from the trees, filling
in a vernal pond and
putting in french
drains. After the
drains in place a layer
of bedrock was layed
on the barn site.
The 5000 board feet
of rough cut hemlock
came from an Amish
Sawmill in Marienville,
Pa. The eight 12 foot
and eight 20 foot 6X6
treated poles came
from Suburban Building
Supply in St. Mary's.
Louie Nelson, a
retired contractor
from Johnsonburg
helped Cliff square
the corners. Next
came putting the 20
foot pole beams in
place. This required
the help of some
strong young men.
Seth Miller and my
son Justin came to
the rescue. Cliff had
hand dug the holes for
the poles.
Cliff's friend Jerry
Luhr helped with the
carpentry. His Uncle
Bobby helped out with
the roofing. Scott
Morgan came down and
helped Cliff wire the
barn.
The windows for the
barn came were
donated gentleman in
Ridgway.
